Submitting Your Website to Search Engines
By: ADRIAN MULLAN
Search Engine Submission refers to the process of submitting your website for listing. Contrary to many of the myths and rumors, submitting your website to search engines and web directories is actually a very simple process. Numerous companies now offer services designed to improve your rankings or make the submission process easier. And while a small minority are good, the vast majority are a complete waste of time and money. If you know a few of the basic rules, you don't need to hire anyone to submit your website. Should You Submit to Hundreds of Search Engines? You may have heard that there are hundreds of search engines online that you can submit your website to. While this is true, 90% of all search traffic comes from the three major search engines - Google, Yahoo! and MSN. This being the case, the major search engines are the only ones worth submitting to. Some of the smaller engines include: Towersearch Burf Beamed Exactseek BigFinder Subjex Cipinet Infotiger Shoula Searchave Do any of these names ring a bell? If not, your customers probably haven't heard of them either. The bottom line is that the smaller search engines are so small that nobody really uses them. In addition to this, Google and Yahoo! now also power a number of medium sized search engines like AltaVista and Askjeeves. This means that if your site is listed in Google and Yahoo! - you're also listed in all the medium sized search engines. The Two Types of Search Engines Submission When it comes to search engine submission, there are two options: Free Inclusion and Paid Inclusion. Free inclusion means there's no charge to submit you site for listing. Google is a search engine that operates based on a free inclusion process. Other companies may ask for a once-off fee to have your site considered for inclusion - this is called paid inclusion. Some Tips before Submitting Your Website The following pages provide easy-to-follow submission instructions for each of the major search engines. The total process shouldn't take any longer than 90 minutes to complete. But before you submit your website, here are a few tips to make sure you get the best results possible. 1. Submit your website AFTER you've completed building it. Obviously your website is a constantly evolving project, so there's no such thing as a 'finished' website. This being the case you should aim to have a minimum of 10 full pages of content before submitting your website. 2. Check your website for any missing information or broken links before submitting. Once you submit your website for consideration, each search engine will send one of their automated software scripts (spiders) to check out your website. You want everything to be in working order when they arrive, so make sure all of your links work beforehand. 3. It takes time to show up in the results. Because there are now literally billions of web pages that make up the Internet, it does take time for your site to get listed. Typically you should submit your website and then wait a couple of months before following up on your submission. The process can happen quicker, but it varies from one search engine to the next. 4. Search engine submission is a once off process. This means once your website is listed, there's no need to re-submit your site.
