105 Ways To Make Money From Home

Three Things to Do Before Designing a Homepage
By: Vivian So

Self-expression is often promoted in society in the 21st century. One of the ways to be fully addressed our creativity and concern is through the World Wide Web. More and more people present themselves through various kind of web site making. Yet perhaps before people started to design a homepage, they need to look at consider three aspects of website planning. First, people have to find a niche that they feel comfortable in writing much about. Second, they must identify the various methods available for them to create web presence. Third, people need to know their desire characteristics of a web host.

At the beginning of a web project, people need to identify their writing niche; thus, there are various ways people can explore about their special passion.

For starters, they can recollect the topics and their stands in passed conversations between their friends and relative. Many people started with recording interesting conversations into a notebook. They bring a notebook that is handy to carry, and record the conversation and they sit in cafés, offices, parks, or on buses or at bus-stops. First, they develop a file system for their notebooks’ entries. An example of a filing system: Use red star stickers for amusement, blue stickers for remembrance, yellow stickers for astonishment, and green stickers for topics needed further information looked up, etc. Vice-versa, people can use various colors of highlighters to mark up their entries title. Make sure the titles of the entries are descriptive and relevant to the specific chat. Reminisce is a rich process to pertain memories of interesting topics and stands that people have that they would otherwise have forgotten of their speeches.

An alternative way to utilize our distinct creativity is to keep a journal of reading response whenever reading is required. In continuous learning, it is essential for people to read and comprehend. During the process of reading, the readers will generate responses, in the form of opinions, attitudes, or feelings, etc, both consciously and subconsciously; therefore, people need to grasp the essence of their reader responses in order to identify their unique voices. This method requires people to be sensitive of their thoughts and feelings processes. People can start by brainstorming a list of questions that will help them to clarify their state of mind. For example, a question to be include in the check list: What kind of feelings do the paragraph or incident pertains? After reading the materials, and ponder of the questions, people can record the process and their final thoughts on a similar filing system mentioned already above, or in whatever people are comfortable with. Thus, journalizing reading experiences allow people to find their own special places in their heart.

Thus, keeping notebooks of conversation and journals of reading responses can help the webmasters to find their niche.

After people have defined their niche, the second step is to be familiar with different methods available to create a web presence; thus, two commonly methods of creating a homepage are the usages blogs and social network profiles, thus defined in the following.

One of the Google definitions of blog:

Short for "Web Log," this term refers to a list of journal entries posted on a Web page. Anybody who knows how to create and publish a Web page can publish their own blog. Some Web hosts have made it even easier by creating an interface where users can simply type a text entry and hit "publish" to publish their blog. Because of the simplicity of creating a blog, many people (often young kids and adults) have found a new presence on the Web.

Blog can be used to create personal and commercial e-newsletters, philosophical or political thoughts spider-web, and products or companies announcements, etc. Xanga.com, Blogger.com, and 360 degree Yahoo, are just some of the blog hosting services made available public for free. Usually, the blog users are allowed to customize the “blog skins” or the blog scheme. Blogging is one form of usage of content management system:

A content management system (CMS) is a system used to manage the content of a Web site. Typically, a CMS consists of two elements: the content management application (CMA) and the content delivery application (CDA). The CMA element allows the content manager or author, who may not know Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), to manage the creation, modification, and removal of content from a Web site without needing the expertise of a Webmaster. (Google.com)

Social network is “A web of interconnected people who directly or indirectly interact with or influence the student and family [,which m]ay include but is not limited to family, teachers and other school staff, friends, neighbors, community contacts, and professional support.” (Google.com). A social network profile is a unique site and link about an individual on the social network. The profile usually includes a person’s gender, occupations, interests, a short biography or introductory paragraph, etc. Some social network profile, such as myspace.com allows users to upload their own music, photos, art, and writings along with the profile. Thus, blogging is also a common feature as a part of a social network profile.

In brief, people can make the presence on web through blog hosting and social network profile making.

When people know their methods in creating their website, the last thing is to select characteristics of web hosts so they feel comfortable working with them. Two of the main considerations are: Is the file manager accessible through file transfer protocol application client, or web interface, both, or either? Does the web host support “What You See Is What You Get” editor or text HTML editor only? Perhaps the first thing is to define two types of file transfer protocol clients and of HTML editors.

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is “used on the Internet for exchanging files. FTP uses the Internet's Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol to enable data transfer. FTP is most commonly used to download a file from a server using the Internet or to upload a file to a server (eg, uploading a Web page file to a server) (definition obtained from Webopedia.com).” Some web hosts will not allow users to upload their work through FTP client. They will only allow people to transfer files within the browser. “What You See Is What You Get” editor is a graphic user interface HTML editor that enables users with minimum coding skills to create a sophisticated homepage while text HTML editor is like notepad: Plain text and coding. People can choose web hosts according to these aspects base on their comfort preference.

Thus, learning about characteristics of web hosts enables others to work on their homepage with their comfortable web-authoring convention.

Finally, website planning includes finding a writing niche, acquainting with methods available for creating web presence, and knowing their desire characteristics of a web host.
